Last Academic Team Tournament

Saturday was my last Academic Team tournament of the season, and it was double elimination.

The first game was against a team we had never played. It was really close throughout the game, and at the end of the third quarter, it was still close. The other team got to choose their lightning round subject first, and I don't remember what it was, but I think they were 40 or 50 points ahead of us when we had to choose our subject -- Authors of Children's Lit or Minerals.

Two of the four people had no clue about either one, so John (the captain) and I looked at each other, and I told him to go with Authors.
1st one -- Author of Sleeping Beauty. I know this, but I can't think of it...he's French...he's French...pass.
2nd one -- Author of Dr. Doolittle. Pass, I have no clue.
3rd one -- Beezus and Ramona. OH! Beverly Cleary. That's 10 points...
4th one -- Superfudge. Judy Blume. 20...

I don't even remember the others, though they included C.S. Lewis and Hans Christian Anderson. But after missing the first 2, I got the next 8.
There are only 10 questions in a lightning round.
We won by 30 or 40 points...(and this next part is going to sound extremely vain)...because of me.

*dances* We won a game!
And then we lost the next two games, but they were both really close. Our second game was against a team we had played before, at the beginning of the season. At that time, they had doubled our score. On Saturday, they only beat us by 50 points, and at halftime they were only leading by 30 points.

We got a lot better this year. We're losing our two seniors, who served as our backups all year long, but other than that, the whole team will be back next year, and we're going to try to recruit more.
We'd also like to go to more competitions next year. More people = a greater likelihood of that.

And everybody lettered in Academic Team!
*celebrates*

  1. Remembered another one of the authors -- E.B. White. They asked about Stuart Little...
*still trying to remember the other three*

  3. I just found out which two teams from that meet made state.
While we didn't play either one at that meet, we'd played them before -- and they'd destroyed us.
Of course, we've gotten better, but still. These two teams really destroyed us.
